Emergency Evacuation on Flickr.
I’m in New Haven, CT, during the blizzard that’s put the whole state into emergency and shut down the highway.
From my Twitter:
It’s 4:30am and I’ve been woken up by the hotel’s emergency evacuation alarm, directing me to exit the building, no elevators
I threw on as many layers as possible, since we were going to be standing outside IN A BLIZZARD because of an emergency
Some of the people in my hallway were already saying it was a “false alarm” but I didn’t know if they knew that for sure or not
I went down the stairwell, as instructed by the intercom, got to the lobby. Stuffed with a mass of humanity and the sound of falling water
You know that shifting pattern water casts onto ceilings? That was happening, with these mini waterfalls crashing down from lobby ceiling
Finally a booming man’s voice shouted over the emergency evacuation message that if our room was not flooding water, we could return
I left my keys safely locked in my room, so I had to get the clerk to issue me a new one, all with the emergency evac message blaring
I was afraid to take the elevator, since the recorded message says not to, so I walked back up the stairs to my room
I’m in my room now, with the emergency evac message repeating on a loop
"ATTENTION PLEASE, THERE HAS BEEN A REPORT OF AN EMERGENCY. PROCEED CALMLY TO THE EXIT AND LEAVE THE BLD IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS USE STAIRWELLS WHERE NECESSARY. ALL HANDICAPPED OCCUPANTS SHALL USE THE EVACUATION PLAN."
Followed by four emergency DRRRT DRRT DRRT DRRT bells
Over and over and over
Occasionally a man’s voice tries to cut through, but he can only say “Attention, attention” and then the auto message cuts him off
Ok, auto evacuation message has shut off. The building is… silent. My heart is beating so hard from the adrenaline.
I’m so grateful we don’t have to wait outside. In the BLIZZARD.
WELP. Guess I am completely awake now. Hello 5:15am.
