If you missed our livestreaming session of our Freelancers Roundtable today, Justin.tv will keep this video up for two days!
Don’t worry, there’ll be a podcast version ready sometime soon-ish, I’ll let you know when. It’ll for-suresies go up on Work Made For Hire first!
We are: Katie Lane, Bill Mudron, Dylan Meconis and Erika Moen and we want to tell you about freelancing.
(For the record, I have been battling a terrible cold [baby flu?] this entire week, so when I’m staring off into space and looking totally out of it, it is because my body is killing me and I feel awful)

Alright, Freelancer, you wanna make a profit? Wanna see some good, cold, hard latinum filling out that bank account of yours? Then you have to follow the Rules!
The Rules of Acquisition have guided the business dealings of the Frengi for centuries. They are time tested and profit approved.
And if you think I’m joking, you’re crazy. While I might not endorse all of Quark’s business practices, knowing what you want and what you’re worth are absolutely necessary for success. Unfortunately, those are two principles I see many freelancers struggle with.
Here is your crash course in how to negotiate like a Ferengi, even if you’re just a lowly hu-man.

So you’re ready to jump into the thrill of freelancing and wanna know where to start? This week’s post is a collection of a few of my favorite posts to get you started and a couple of resources you can add to your must read & watch lists.
All you would-be freelancers, READ EVERYTHING ON WORK MADE FOR HIRE. This is the good shit.
For Emerald City Comic Con this year, George Rohac (Director of Operations at Oni Press, Freelance Guru, Wizard) and I got the band back together.
We put together a panel about the things we think you need to be a successful freelancer. And because we want to spread the news far and wide, I’m publishing all of the tips, tricks and secrets as this week’s post.
You guys, Katie and George really really know their stuff— Katie’s advice has, quite honestly, completely transformed how I operate as a freelancer. For the better! If you don’t know where to start when you’re a lone agent in the art (or whatever!) world, check out her blog.
“Art is dirty! Erika cleaning her screens at the local car wash.”, photo by Katie.
Katie kindly drove me to the carwash where I could finally, finally rinse out my silkscreens with their fancy power hoses. Although the technician very politely questioned whether blasting out photo emulsion and whatever else is in the chemical spray you use to soften it up is maybe, possibly, in violation of their “NO DUMPING TOXIC CHEMICALS” rule that is posted in giant letters on the wall (a corner of it is showing, on the left hand side of the photo)— but he let me do it anyway! I hope I did not poison the world. I just want to print pretty pictures.
Hey guys! Once a year for the last three, my good friends Katie Lane, Dylan Meconis, Bill Mudron, and I have gathered together to record a podcast about the ins and outs of being a self-employed freelancer. If you missed our live broadcasting, fret not! For recordings, both podcast and video, are here! For you! It is a two-hour long ordeal, so they’ve been broken into two, roughly hour-long segments. Podcast Version (From Work Made For Hire):
Man, with the holidays coming up, surely you are looking for some finely crafted goods to give as presents, right? Lemme just point your eyeballs to: Bill Mudron’s Shop Dylan Meconis’ Shop My Shop and original artwork
Dylan Meconis, Katie Lane, Bill Mudron and I spent two hours today talking about freelancing, being self-employed, the taxes that go along with those things and making comics.
EDITED to add: The actual interview starts at the 17 minute mark! Wish I could edit the video, but that’s not an option. Sorry!
